Every December the same group chat wakes up. Someone has to find a place for the office party, someone else wants one long table for the whole family, and by the second week of November half the good dates are gone. The nights that go well almost always start with the same few decisions, made early.
I run Gaucho Grill, so I see a lot of these parties up close. Here's how to pick from the holiday party venues in Los Angeles and Orange County without the last-minute scramble.
How to choose a holiday party venue: 8 decisions to make first
1. Get a real headcount, then add a little
Start with the number of people who will actually come, not the size of the invite list. Leave room for the three or four who say yes late. When a venue quotes a capacity, ask whether it's the seated count for your room or for the whole building; they're very different numbers. At Gaucho Grill Pasadena, the Pampas Room seats up to 18, a leadership dinner, while the Gaucho Room takes up to 100, the whole office.
2. Pick two or three dates, not one
Fridays and Saturdays in December go first. A Tuesday or Wednesday dinner, or a long lunch, is easier to book and often easier for people with kids. Go into every conversation with a first choice and two backups.
3. Set the budget per person, and ask for every number in writing
Decide what you can spend per guest, including drinks, tax and gratuity. Then ask each venue for the deposit, any food-and-beverage minimum, service charges and the cancellation deadline in writing. Terms vary a lot from place to place, especially in December, and the cheapest quote on paper isn't always the cheapest night.
4. Decide how private it needs to be
A private room has a door. A semi-private space, like a section of a patio, is yours but other diners can see and hear you. A buyout is the whole place. Speeches or awards? You want a door. A relaxed dinner? Semi-private is usually fine and opens up more options.
5. Choose the menu format before you choose the menu
Family style keeps a table talking, since everyone passes the same platters. A buffet works when people arrive at different times. A coursed dinner feels more formal and keeps the timing tight. Collect allergies and dietary needs with the RSVP and send them to the venue in one list, well before the date. Gaucho Grill's banquet menus are served family style, buffet style or coursed, and can be customized for the group. Family style is my favorite for parrilla: empanadas and provoleta go down the table first, then the steaks. If you're comparing options, the banquets inquiry form is the fastest way to get ours.
6. Think about the drive, not just the room
In Southern California, the commute decides who shows up. Map where most guests live or work and look for a place in the middle, with easy freeway access. Ask about parking too: a free lot, validated parking or valet changes the night for a group of sixty.
7. Ask what the room has for speeches and music
If there's a toast, a slideshow or a raffle, ask what the room has: a microphone, a screen, a sound system, and whether you can bring your own playlist. Test it before guests arrive, not during the first speech.
8. Decide if the party should come to you
Sometimes the best venue is the office. If the team can't leave or the budget is tight, holiday catering in Los Angeles is worth pricing next to a restaurant dinner. Ask about setup, serving pieces and pickup times when you compare. Gaucho Catering, from Gaucho Grill, covers everything from a small gathering to a big party.
Make a night of it: 5 holiday outings, one near each Gaucho Grill
The dinner people talk about in January is usually the one that followed an outing. Here's one seasonal plan near each of our five restaurants. Check the event's own site for tickets and hours before you commit.
1. Pasadena: Enchanted: Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens
Descanso Gardens' nighttime light walk in La Cañada Flintridge runs November 22, 2026 to January 9, 2027, from 5:30 to 10 PM, and is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The route is about a mile, accessible, and tickets are sold by date and entry time.
Gaucho Grill Pasadena, at 455 S. Lake Ave. in the South Lake District, is a modern dining room with a lit wine wall, red leather banquettes and a patio on Lake Avenue, about 10 minutes from the Rose Bowl. Groups can book the Pampas Room (up to 18), the semi-private Patio (up to 40) or the Gaucho Room (up to 100), from a leadership dinner to the whole office. Parking is validated in the structure directly behind the restaurant.
2. Buena Park: Knott's Merry Farm
Knott's Berry Farm turns into Knott's Merry Farm from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with holiday lights, live shows and Santa; the park is closed on Christmas Day (Knott's Merry Farm).
Gaucho Grill Buena Park, at 5980 Orangethorpe Ave., minutes from Knott's, is our largest restaurant, with a total capacity of 350, long communal tables, an outdoor patio and the Gaucho Mercado, an on-site store for Argentine goods. The Stone Room (up to 20) and Garden Room (23 to 33) handle private groups, and the events team arranges full buyouts. With a free private lot and booster seats, it's where tour groups, sports teams and family reunions land after a day at the parks.
3. Downey: Columbia Memorial Space Center
For a daytime team outing, Downey's space science center at 12400 Columbia Way is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
Gaucho Grill Downey, at 8830 Apollo Way, is a 250-seat restaurant near Stonewood Center with its own Gaucho Mercado, a string-lit covered patio (the Patio holds up to 80), and desserts like flan and alfajores. The Buenos Aires Room (24 to 30) suits a business dinner, and the Gaucho Room (up to 120) takes corporate functions and holiday parties. Parking is free in the plaza lot, which makes Gaucho Grill Downey an easy company lunch after the visit.
4. West Covina: Let It Snow at City Hall
The City of West Covina hosts Let It Snow on Friday, December 4, 2026, from 6 to 9 PM, in the City Hall parking lot at 1444 W. Garvey Ave. South.
Gaucho Grill West Covina, at 1129 W. West Covina Parkway near Plaza West Covina and the I-10, is one of the few Argentine steakhouses in the San Gabriel Valley, with a wood-beam bar and live music events. The Gaucho Room holds up to 50 and the semi-private Patio up to 40, a good size for a family celebration or a mid-sized office party. Parking is free in the plaza lot, and there's a kids' menu.
5. Temecula: Holiday Taste of Old Town and Santa's Electric Light Parade
On Thursday, December 3, 2026, Old Town Temecula hosts a self-guided tasting walk from 5 to 8:30 PM, $45 per person, with tickets on sale November 3 (Old Town Temecula Association). The next night, Santa's Electric Light Parade starts at 7 PM and travels into Old Town (City of Temecula).
Gaucho Grill Temecula sits right in the middle of it, at Front and Main, in the building that opened in 1914 as the First National Bank of Temecula and saw Riverside County's first bank robbery in 1930. It's warm and wine-forward, with a red-lit wine wall, boutique Argentine Malbecs and a wood-fired parrilla. It hosts private and semi-private groups of 15 or more, up to 170 guests, and is open until 10 PM every day, an easy dinner after the Holiday Taste or the parade.
A simple holiday party timeline
1. As soon as you have a headcount and a budget
Send your dates to two or three venues and compare the answers side by side.
2. Three weeks out
Confirm the final count, the menu format and the dietary list. Ask the venue what they need from you and by when.
3. The week of the party
Plan the seating if it matters, line up who speaks and for how long, and share parking details with guests.
4. The day after
Thank the team that worked your party. If it went well, ask about next year's date while it's fresh.
Planning yours at Gaucho Grill
Every Gaucho Grill cooks USDA Prime and Choice beef over a wood-fired parrilla and hosts private and semi-private events for 15 or more, with banquet menus, full bar packages and an event coordinator. If the party stays at the office, Gaucho Catering brings it to you. Otherwise, send us your date and headcount through the banquets inquiry form, and we'll take it from there.
FAQs
How far in advance should I book a holiday party venue?
As early as you can once you know the headcount and budget. Friday and Saturday dates in December go first, so start with two or three date options and be ready to move to a weeknight or a lunch.
What should I ask a venue before booking a corporate holiday party?
Ask for the seated capacity of the specific room, whether it's private or semi-private, the menu formats, and every cost in writing: deposit, minimums, service charges and the cancellation deadline. Also ask about parking and what the room has for speeches.
Is family style, buffet or a coursed dinner better for a holiday party?
Family style keeps conversation going, a buffet suits staggered arrivals, and a coursed dinner feels more formal with tighter timing. Pick the format first, then the menu.
What are some holiday things to do near Pasadena or Buena Park with a group?
Descanso Gardens runs Enchanted: Forest of Light in La Cañada Flintridge from November 22, 2026 to January 9, 2027, and Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park runs Knott's Merry Farm from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Check their sites for tickets and hours.
Can a restaurant cater an office holiday party instead?
Many can. Compare catering against a restaurant dinner, and ask about setup, serving pieces and pickup times. Gaucho Grill offers catering through its catering page.
